Reinventing the ice cream experience.

MUSH! modular personalized ice cream concept

MUSH! is a food innovation concept that began with a simple childhood habit. Growing up, I loved combining unexpected ingredients and flavours, mixing ice cream with fruit, candy, soft drinks, and sometimes even savoury foods. What started as playful experimentation eventually became a much bigger question: what if everyone could create their own perfect ice cream?

That question became the foundation of MUSH!, a product concept designed to give people complete freedom to build personalised ice cream combinations while turning a traditional dessert into something interactive, memorable, and highly customisable.

From the beginning, my ambition was not to create another flavour or another ice cream brand. It was to define an entirely new product category that brings personalisation, creativity, and food innovation together in one experience.

Designing a new product category

MUSH! modular ice cream discs and waffle biscuit structure

MUSH! is built around modularity. Instead of serving ice cream in cones, cups, or conventional sandwiches, the product uses stackable ice cream discs placed between two specially designed, waffle-inspired biscuits.

This structure lets customers build their own combinations by choosing biscuit flavours, multiple ice cream layers, and unexpected ingredient pairings. The result feels less like a standard dessert and more like a creation made specifically for them.

The concept was deliberately designed to encourage experimentation. Alongside classics such as pistachio, hazelnut, vanilla, and strawberry, I explored more unconventional combinations that could bring sweet, sour, fizzy, creamy, and even savoury elements together in entirely new ways.

Turning an idea into reality

MUSH! food product prototype development

Unlike many concept projects, MUSH! moved beyond sketches and theoretical discussions. To validate the idea, I assembled a multidisciplinary team and collaborated with Sergio Colalucci, World Champion Gelato Maker, to understand whether the concept could become a real, manufacturable product.

Together, we developed the first working prototypes and tested different formulations, structures, textures, and production methods. The goal was to preserve the playful spirit of the concept while ensuring the product could deliver a practical and enjoyable experience.

This phase transformed MUSH! from a creative vision into a tangible product that could be physically tested, evaluated, and improved through real-world feedback.

Solving a technical challenge

One of the project’s most ambitious goals was to improve the handling characteristics of ice cream itself. Traditional ice cream begins to melt almost immediately, limiting portability and reducing the potential for meaningful customisation.

To support MUSH!’s modular structure, the team worked on an ice cream formulation with significantly delayed melting properties while preserving the flavour quality and texture people expect.

The resulting prototypes performed remarkably well. Even in hot summer conditions, the product retained its structure for extended periods, with some tests showing melting times of more than forty minutes. That progress was crucial to making the concept operationally viable.

Brand, experience, and product design

MUSH! product branding and visual identity

My involvement extended far beyond the original idea. I defined the product vision, shaped the user experience, designed the product format, developed the visual identity, and helped establish the overall direction of the brand.

Every part of the experience was treated as part of a larger system. The visual identity, embossed biscuit design, product architecture, flavour customisation process, and customer journey were all designed to reinforce the idea that every MUSH! creation should feel unique and personal.

The project also explored future retail concepts, including dedicated MUSH! displays and automated distribution solutions that would let customers create and assemble personalised combinations in a simple, intuitive way.

Validation through real users

Prototypes were presented to and tested with real people, generating valuable feedback on taste, usability, product perception, and overall appeal. The response was overwhelmingly positive, confirming both the appeal of the concept and the strength of its customisation-led approach.

The testing phase showed that people were interested not only in the product itself, but also in the creative process behind it. Building a personalised combination became part of the experience and one of the concept’s strongest differentiators.

From imagination to innovation

MUSH! is one of the most complete examples of my approach to product creation. What began as a personal observation evolved into a fully developed concept supported by branding, product design, prototyping, technical experimentation, stakeholder collaboration, and real-world validation.

As Product Creator, Product Designer, Brand Designer, and Project Lead, I guided the project from its earliest vision through the development of physical prototypes and consumer testing. The experience demonstrated my ability to spot opportunities, bring together the right expertise, turn ideas into tangible products, and create experiences that connect innovation with human curiosity.

Although MUSH! has not yet launched commercially, the project proved that a highly unconventional idea can become a functional, desirable, and validated product. It remains a strong example of how imagination, design thinking, and collaborative execution can turn a simple question into real-world innovation.
